When Ukiyo-e Met Chinese Poet Liu Yong

Liu Yong (Chinese: 柳永) (987–1053), a well-known poet in the Northern Song Dynasty, whose works were widely spread and became popular. According to legend, “Wherever there is a well-drinking place, you can sing his poem.” In his poem, the language is gorgeous and poignant.

When I was drawing this Ukiyo-e, immediately Liu Yong’s poem popped into my mind. So I wrote

“心上秋风叠成愁” – “xin shang qiu feng die cheng chou”

“It is fall, standing in the wind, my heart is full of sadness.”
